Ambiguous Exposures 2021

Greetings and salutations from Bubbe, mulling over the possibilities on the 2021 card.

Yesterday's article about illegal exposures ended up being one about LEGAL, DUAL exposures, because there are only two illegal (singular) exposures on this year's card. That's not an article, it's a tweet! To give you more information, I prepared an exhaustive list of every possible double exposure which can be made on the card.

Yes, I've got way too much time on my hands, but I also found it to be a really useful exercise in learning the card. You might want to use the list to look for those combinations on the card. I'm using it today to discuss ambiguous exposures. Being able to recognize them is helpful for two reasons:

1) If you're defending against an opponent who has exposed two melds, you need to recognize what they're playing so you don't throw a tile that they need. Sometimes you may incorrectly guess their hand, especially when there is more than one hand that uses those two exposures. In cases of ambiguous exposure, it's important to know what the hands might be, and therefore what the "safe tiles" are.

2) If YOU have made those two exposures, you may need some flexibility. Perhaps the other tiles you need have all gone out, or you may get some useful tiles and want to change up your hand. It's important to know your options, limited as you are by the already-exposed two melds.

Let's go back over the list and point out the ambiguous exposures, those that correspond to more than one hand.

The good news is there are only 104 of them, about a third of the total number of legal exposures. Another way to think of that is, two-thirds of dual exposures point to only ONE specific hand.

I certainly don't expect you to memorize the ambiguous exposures, but it's helpful to familiarize yourself with those types of hands. Any guesses as to which combinations appear in the most hands? Answers at the end!

KEY: * means same hand with option of suit (or Wind in Q#1)

** means same hand with option of suit AND could be "above" or "below" these exposures

***means same hand, same suit BUT could be "above" or "below" these exposures

****Grey area. Needs same number in both suits: one is for pair, one is for kong

+ Could be any Odd number

++ Could be any Even number

+++ Could be any number at all (LOL!!)

These can all be used as examples, when we talk about switching hands tomorrow and the next day.

Answer time!! Which same-suit double exposure combination appears in the most hands? It’s 666 7777 (CR #1, #2**, #3, #4). It can show up in

55 666 7777 888 99

444 5555 666 7777

444 5555 666 7777

666 7777 888 9999

666 7777 888 9999

4 55 666 7777 DDDD

FFFFF 55 666 7777

Which tw0-suited double exposure combination appears in the most hands? It's 7777 9999 (CR #2, #5, O #3, #6). It can show up in

666 7777 888 9999

FF 7777 8888 9999

555 7777 777 9999

11 33 55 7777 9999

Of course, if you REALLY want to be a stickler, the most ambiguous hand, the hand with the MOST variations, is Q #1:

FFFFF XXXX NNNNN

where X can be any numeric tile at all!

  1. Just trying to follow along here. First one 111 2222 - shouldn't that be CR #2? and the third one 111 DDDD - LK #3? Maybe I don't understand what you're conveying.
